Cavities can happen to the best of us, even if we have great oral hygiene. But, if a dentist has filled your cavities with a metal amalgam filling, then you’re at risk of developing mercury toxicity. However, visiting a biological dentistry center for a SMART assessment is the first step to protecting your health.
At Well Rooted Dentistry, powered by the BioMed Center of New England, our dental team specializes in the safe removal of metal amalgam fillings. Not only that, but our skilled dentists expertly replace metal fillings using only the highest quality biocompatible materials. So, if you have metal fillings, then schedule your SMART assessment today!
What are metal amalgam fillings?
In the past, dentists filled cavities using a mixture–or amalgam–of liquid and powdered metals. The metals in these amalgam fillings consisted of silver, tin, copper, and up to 50% elemental mercury.
Research suggests that the mercury in metal fillings releases a harmful, odorless, and tasteless gas when disturbed by brushing or chewing. This means that people with metal fillings could be unknowingly breathing in toxic mercury vapor.
Mercury toxicity can have disastrous long-term effects on your overall health, such as:
- Neurological disorders
- Cardiovascular complications
- Hormonal imbalances
- Respiratory problems
- Kidney damage
What is SMART?
Since the 1950s, dentists have been replacing metal fillings with a safer restorative alternative–resin composite. To make way for this revolutionary restorative material, dentists have had to implement the safe removal of existing metal fillings.
Subsequently, the International Academy of Oral Medicine & Toxicology (IAOMT) developed an extensive protocol for the safe removal of metal fillings. The IAOMT calls this evidence-based protocol the Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique (SMART).
Be smart–get a SMART assessment!
At Well Rooted Dentistry, we prioritize our patient’s health by being a mercury-free and mercury-safe facility. That’s why we encourage patients with existing metal fillings to schedule a SMART assessment.
When you schedule a SMART assessment, we carefully examine your mouth, teeth, and metal restorations before beginning the removal process. Then, both you and our skilled dental team will work together on a safe and effective treatment plan.
Once a treatment plan is in place, we will begin the process of safely removing any existing metal fillings. However, we don’t just carefully remove metal fillings–we also safely store and dispose of them following strict guidelines. This ensures that we aren’t accidentally exposing our patients, dental team, and environment to harmful mercury vapors.
I got a SMART assessment–now what?
After your SMART assessment and the safe removal of your existing metal fillings, it’s time to replace them. Because our facility emphasizes metal-free dentistry, our team uses a safe and durable resin composite material to fill cavities.
However, before we replace your fillings with resin composite, we conduct extensive materials testing. This ensures that our patients won’t have any adverse reactions to any of the materials that we use.
Once testing confirms that our materials won’t react with your body chemistry, we start the process of replacing your old fillings. In no time at all, you’ll have a non-toxic, tooth-colored restoration that looks great and strengthens your natural tooth!
