While many Americans consider them a relatively new product, essential oils date back as far as 4,500 BC. Ancient civilizations recognized the tremendous healing properties of essential oils. By extracting the natural oils from plant seeds, leaves, and flowers, they used them in everything from ointments to cosmetics.
Although Western medicine doesn’t always advocate for essential oils, they are gaining in popularity. However, many people aren’t sure about the specific healing properties of these precious oils. Additionally, they aren’t sure which oils will benefit them most.
So, that’s why the Elements e-store, powered by the BioMed Center of New England, wants to introduce you to the top four essential oils and blends. We’ll explore their natural benefits and how you can safely use them to achieve optimal health and wellness.
First Things First!
Essential oils are not meant for ingestion. Furthermore, essential oils are incredibly strong. You should always dilute them with a carrier oil, such as:
- Jojoba oil
- Coconut oil
- Sweet almond oil
- Hemp seed oil
Aromatherapists and holistic doctors recommend a dilution rate of six drops essential oil to one ounce carrier oil. This establishes a 1% essential oil dilution, which is considered safe for most people.
Additionally, you should always spot-test any essential oils you intend to use. To do this, place a small amount of diluted oil on the skin and wait 30-90 minutes. If there are no adverse effects after 30-90 minutes, then it’s safe to continue using the diluted oil topically.
Finally, if you’re unsure if an essential oil is safe for topical use or ethically sourced, then contact the Elements store. We’ll gladly help you find safe, ethically-sourced, and effective oils for natural healing and wellness.
Cure-All Tea Tree
Tea tree oil–also known as melaleuca alternifolia–has anti-fungal, anti-microbial, and anti-bacterial properties. Extensive research on topical applications of tea tree oil indicate that it is effective in treating or managing several maladies, including:
- Dandruff
- Acne
- Athlete’s foot
- Lice
- Nail fungus
Tea tree oil is among the strongest essential oils and requires proper dilution before use. Try diluting tea tree oil with a non-comedogenic carrier oil, like sweet almond or hemp seed oil. These oils protect the skin without clogging pores.
Soothing Lavender
Aromatherapists have long praised the soothing effects of lavender for anxiety-, stress-, and sleep-related issues. However, lavender has shown promising healing effects as a topical antiseptic and anti-inflammatory salve. Try rubbing diluted lavender oil on minor cuts and bruises to reduce pain and keep wounds clean.
Cleansing Eucalyptus
Eucalyptus oil has anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial qualities which help relieve pain and fight infections. Additionally, eucalyptus oil is a fantastic oil to keep in the medicine cabinet this cold, flu, and COVID season. When carefully diluted, its nasal-clearing and revitalizing properties will eliminate congestion and soothe achy joints.
China Healing Oil Blend
This special blend of basil, leptotaenia, spearmint, wintergreen, and worm seed oil is widely regarded as a wonder oil. Together, these oils support the circulatory system, treat small wounds, and protect the body from parasites and other harmful pathogens.
